I started therapy because I was dealing with suicidal ideation. It was getting so bad that it was having a very negative influence on my life. I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity Cherish Families provided me to finally get all this stuff out of my head and into reality where I can deal with it. My therapist was amazing. The fact that he was trained to understand the culture made such a big difference for two reasons. One, I didn’t have to give him any backstory or context. He just got it. And two, he didn’t have any judgment when I shared about my polygamist upbringing and my current polygamist marriage. It didn’t phase him. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever felt more loved and accepted by a total stranger. He laughed at my antics and helped me uncover the woman I’d buried deep inside.
I'm happy to say that I haven't had a suicidal thought in almost a year. Prior to this, suicidal ideation was just normal for me; I thought everybody experienced it. I can't express how grateful I am that these resources were available to me when I needed it.
